During the 18th century, France became an international focus for the advancement of science. French became the international scientific language, finally supplanting Latin, and scholars from across Europe and America traveled to Paris for the purpose of refining their education and meeting the great teachers of chemistry, mineralogy and crystallography.
The passion for mineralogy in a purely scientific sense, relatively unconnected with its utility to the mining industry, flourished under the new philosophy of the Enlightenment.
