Jun. 22--Wilmer Hernandez-Ulloa came to the United States three years ago with plans to land a job and send money back to his impoverished family in Honduras.
But instead he faces a sentence of 30 years in prison after a Roanoke jury convicted him of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of one of his housemates.
The reasons for the murder of Orlando Sanchez-Diaz remain murky. Hernandez-Ulloa told his housemates that Sanchez-Diaz attacked him with a knife after the two argued over loud music. He told his landlady, "It was me or him."
But after hearing two days of evidence, the Roanoke jury Thursday rejected his claims of self-defense.
