Mineral collecting in Copenhagen (Denmark's only major city) dates back to Ole Worm (1588-1654), a Danish physician, archeologist, and Professor of Natural Philosophy and Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. He began collecting natural history specimens (including minerals) in 1620, and devoted the first four chapters of his published catalog (Museum Wormianum, 1655) to the minerals in his collection. The catalog includes a fascinating engraving of his collection room, filled with stuffed animals, bones, tortoise shells and ethnographic items, and many trays of mineral specimens carefully organized into categories such as metals, stones, salts, and so on.
