The other most prominent early mineralogist in Mexico was Andres Manuel del Rio y Fernandez, born in Madrid and educated at the College of San Isidro and the University of Alcala de Henares. Following his graduation he entered a public contest in experimental physics (though his Bachelor's degree was in theology and classical languages), and performed so well that he was granted a scholarship by the king to attend the newly founded Mining Academy in Almaden.
