Cambridge University Press has produced a beautiful issue of the collected works of Nikolai Vavilov, the first such English translation of the geneticist's major works. The chronologically arranged papers present the evolution of his novel concept that there were "centers" of domestication, which were associated with areas of high diversity of wild ancestors of crop species. The theory, based in Mendelian genetics and taxonomic differentiation, was a serious and pioneering exploration of variability of plant populations.
