The red clay stains have presumably been washed out of Roger Federer's and Andy Roddick's laundry, but the unpleasant memories of the French Open will be tougher to erase. A championship on the slick, friendly Wimbledon grass certainly would help.
Federer, who lost to Rafael Nadal yet again in Paris, is back where he feels most comfortable this week, at the All England Club, strolling through the petunia-lined walkways and playing on the 8-millimeter blades of perfectly manicured lawn. He is on a mission to win a fifth consecutive Wimbledon title, and with a 48-0 record on grass, he is a safe bet.
