Risperidone has been approved by the FDA for "irritability associated with autism," and clinicians in large numbers have been using it for behavioral problems in patients with autism spectrum disorders for some time. However, risperidone has no effect on the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders, and is a poor treatment for most comorbid conditions. We discuss the evidence behind the use of risperidone in persons with autism spectrum disorders, and what steps would have to be taken to develop a similar evidence base for other interventions.
