The use of agreed terminology is fundamental to communication. The background to this project indicated that texture modified foods and thickened fluids are formulated according to different systems and known by a wide range of different descriptions in different healthcare sites in Australia. This has a number of disadvantages. Healthcare professionals from different facilities are not easily able to communicate about patient treatment and miscommunication is a higher risk than it need be. Practitioners and food service staff move employment--a new facility means becoming rapidly accustomed to a new texture modified foods and thickened fluids system with different names. ...
