During the go-go '80s, financial planning became a buzzword for accountants, attorneys, insurance agents, stockbrokers, and investment counselors. However this term was used to describe very different financial services. That's not surprising because financial planning means different things to different people.

Surveys by the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP) show that a majority of people claiming to be financial planners come from the securities and insurance industries. Fewer than 15 percent of IAFP members have accounting backgrounds or are CPAs. But that's changing fast.
