Article: Mutual admiration society? (India and South Africa)

Economic, political and even cultural ties between India and South Africa which stretch back over a century were severed when India broke all official links in 1948, with the onset of apartheid. Diplomatic relations have now been resumed and Nelson Mandela's visit to India this month should signal a trade boom between the two countries.

South African President Mr Nelson Mandela will be the chief guest at India's prestigious Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on 26 January 1995. Mandela's presence will, it is hoped, cement the "special relationship" between the two countries and give a further boost to trade which is already showing signs of a boom.
