Huge brawls are spilling across the streets of Harare as taxi operators fight over ranks, passengers and routes, and there is a growing fear that the taxi war may get even hotter.
It has become commonplace to see taxi drivers exchange blows at traffic lights before the traffic police arrive on the scene. A Harare Central Police spokesman told African Business that they handled an average of 50 cases of taxi drivers assaulting one another each day in the greater Harare area. Some officers are known to be demanding money from the drivers before they set them free.
About 50% of the taxis are not registered and operate as pirate taxis. But there are now simply too ...
