Jun. 25--More than 80 years after his death, Elwood Haynes, the man whose name is synonymous with the automotive industry in Kokomo and Howard County, was honored here once more Saturday night.
With the 150th anniversary of his birth approaching, the automobile pioneer and scientist was the sole inductee of the inaugural class of the Howard County Automotive Heritage Hall of Fame.
Credited with building one of the first gasoline-powered automobiles in the United States when he drove the Pioneer down Pumpkinvine Pike July 4, 1894, Haynes is the man chiefly responsible for Kokomo's status as an automotive town.
