WASHINGTON, Jun. 25, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- White House officials and congressional leaders finalized a legal text on Monday that paves the way for Congress to pass free trade agreements with Peru, Panama, Colombia and Korea.
At least one trade agreement is likely to be forged as early as next month due to the legal text, which regulates the process through which lawmakers consider pending free trade agreements. Advocacy groups have blasted the measure, claiming that Democrats have reneged on promises that led them to power last fall.
