Paul Simon is a noted perfectionist, so it was ironic that the musical tribute staged in his honor last month was somewhat flawed. It was memorable, to be sure, but imperfect from the start. (The tribute concert airs at 9 p.m. Wednesday on PBS stations.)
With Simon peering down from a box in the balcony of the gilded Warner Theatre and PBS cameras rolling, the concert opened with folkie Shawn Colvin and bluegrass stars Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas joining Simon's backing band onstage. But just as they began to play a vintage Simon and Garfunkel song, "The Boxer," a loud hum came oozing out of the PA.
