Jun. 28--LOWELL -- Lowell's latest estimated population: 103,229.

The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday listed Lowell as the 245th most-populated city in 2006, in releasing estimates of all cities with more than 100,000 residents. Lowell was listed as having 103,383 residents in 2005. Community leaders have questioned Census estimates in the past, because of the difficulty in accurately counting minority communities.

Lowell remains the state's fourth-largest city, behind Boston (590,763), Worcester (175,454), and Springfield (151,176).
