Jun. 28--Helped by activity surrounding the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, Hampton Roads' jobless rate was unchanged in May, a month when unemployment typically climbs, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Wednesday.
"May is not normally a big month for tourism, but this year it was better than April because of the Jamestown activities," said William F. Mezger, chief economist of the commission's Economic Information Services Division. "A lot of people were put to work earlier than usual."
The Jamestown anniversary helped the jobless rate in Williamsburg drop to 4.6 percent in May from 5.2 percent in April.
