Jun. 29--Look. The world seems to hold its breath as a bald eagle appears over the tree line, its massive outline silhouetted against a blue sky, nearly motionless as it slices rapidly through the atmosphere. It is a near-perfect flying machine.
No one who has seen a bald eagle in flight will forget it. There's a reason it is called "majestic," and it's no wonder the founding fathers chose it bird as the symbol of the new nation. Bald eagles are powerful, confident and free.
But like the Native American people who lived on this continent before the Europeans arrived, bald eagles retreated before the onslaught of newcomers.
