Jul. 1--Afew years back, when we quoted the famous line from Shakespeare, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers," in an editorial, Paul Michael Hassett, who was then president of the New York State Bar Association, accused us of doing a great disservice by indulging in a cheap shot at the legal profession. Lawyers, he admonished us, are essential to preserving a democracy based on the rule of law.
He's entitled to his view, of course, but if he, or any attorney, wants to know why people are often glib about their profession, they need only look at the case of the missing pants in Washington, D.C. It is a joke in itself, but one that, unfortunately, ...
