If there is one conclusion to be drawn from the Railway Age/Parsons Seventh International Conference on Communications-Based Train Control, it's that new technology in general and CBTC in particular seem to be more widely accepted and implemented in Europe and Asia than in North America.
Indeed, in the rail transit sector, no fewer than 58 systems are in operation or in process outside of the U.S., where in the past two years there have been no new contracts. So, aside from New York City Transit's successful Canarsie Line pilot (RA, April, p. 23) and a pending procurement on PATH (which is like a first cousin to NYCT), domestic activity has slowed to a crawl.
