SHOCK REVERBERATED THROUGHOUT the Arab and Muslim worlds when news broke of the 11 November 2005 death of legendary Syrian-American filmmaker Moustapha Akkad. Two days earlier, a bomb blast in an Amman hotel had instantly killed Akkad's 34-year-old daughter, Rima, and fatally wounded the legendary filmmaker. The two were in the Jordanian capital to attend a wedding when a suicide bomber set off his explosives.
Akkad's death affected some Arabs and Muslims in the way the loss of a family member might. An estimated 10,000 people gathered for his burial procession from Amman to Aleppo, where more than 1,500 Syrians paid their respects at the funeral reception ...
