A Canadian hospital is using blueberry juice as an inexpensive, effective magnetic resonance contrast agent for upper gastrointestinal tract exams.
Typical MR contrast agents used to image the GI tract often are unpleasant for patients to drink. However, several studies have supported the effectiveness of blueberry juice as an oral MR contrast agent. A study in Japan found that blueberry juice compared favorably with manganese chloride, a common contrast agent for MR of the abdomen and pelvis.
