Abstract
Question: Is the expansion of Hippophae rhamnoides in coastal dunes associated with a decline in plant species richness, and is this decline best described by a hump-backed relationship between species number and shrub cover?
Location: Grey and yellow dunes on the East Frisian islands Spiekeroog and Norderney.
Methods: Total plant species richness as well as the number of herbaceous and cryptogam species were determined in 2001 using plots of 16 [m.sup.2] size.
