In light of the growing influence of China on the African Continent, the European Commission is focusing on Beijing in order to attempt to change its practices. With this in mind, it organised, on 28 June in Brussels, its first trilateral' conference attended by European, Chinese and African representatives. 'We are considered to be competitors while, in fact, we are partners,' said the EU's Development Commissioner Louis Michel, who is determined to engage Beijing on this dossier by further pursuing the dialogue launched for the first time during the EU-China Summit in September 2006.
