ABSTRACT
Dalit communities in Andhra Pradesh consider Gurram Jashuva (1895-1971) as the first modern Telugu Dalit poet. But the non-Dalit communities of the state never think so. Contrary to the claim made by Dalit communities, Jashuva has been deliberately dropped out from the literary scene by the mainstream literary critics. It was for this reason that Dalit communities in Andhra Pradesh organized his birth centenary celebrations in 1995 and tried to rehabilitate his literary contributions. But the author thinks that such kind of attempt does not help much for the larger issues involved in the construction of literary history and its categories.
