While Indian society has, for centuries, been the most hierarchical among the known civilizations, the literature of this country, until very recently, has never focused on the problems of the untouchables--the groups of people located at the bottom of the hierarchy. The pen has, by and large, been in the hands of those who wielded power and those outside the grid of authority and agency have generally been rendered invisible, even unmentionable, in the so-called great literary texts. As a consequence the untouchables, who constitute the fifth of the Indian population have remained voiceless for several centuries
