Jun. 30--As his combine motored through a wheat field near Minneapolis on Friday, farmer Steve Clanton wasn't fretting over the dismal returns.
As expected, the Easter weekend freeze reduced his yield -- to around 25 bushels to the acre -- and zapped the grain's quality with test weights from 48 to 56 pounds to the bushel.
The industry standard is 60 pounds to a bushel. Lighter wheat is subject to heavy price discounts.
"What we got's what we got. We don't have any choice," Clanton said.
Light wheat is the norm in these parts as farmers work to put this harvest behind them.
