Jul. 3--The amazing journey of Zebulon Montgomery Pike ended 200 years ago this week, when the explorer was returned to American territory at Natchitoches, La.
We don't know what kind of Fourth of July celebration Pike may have seen in the territory that had been purchased from France only four years earlier, but he did record his own feelings in his journal.
"Language cannot express the gaiety of my heart, when I once more beheld the standard of my country waved aloft! 'All hail,' cried I, 'the ever sacred name of country, in which is embraced that of kindred, friends, and every other tie which is dear to the soul of man!' ...
