Jul. 3--HOBART, Ind. -- The construction company building a $6.7 million Hilton Garden Inn here is threatening to void all union contracts in retaliation for an informational union picket line set up at the site.

Local 2 of the International Union of Elevators Constructors began picketing the site at 7775 Mississippi St. Monday morning to protest the use of workers from Abell Elevator Co., a Kentucky-based, nonunion subcontractor.

The company "isn't paying prevailing wages" to its workers, said Tom Manning, business representative for the Chicago local, which covers Lake and Porter counties.
