Jul. 4--Happy birthday, America! As we enjoy our parades and music and picnics and fireworks and the shear joy of being American, let us keep in mind what our ancestors had to go through to get us to this celebration.
When the Founding Fathers declared independence for the Colonists from Great Britain on this date 231 years ago, life in the United States did not change overnight.
Nearly eight years of arduous fighting were endured -- starting with the Battle of Concord and Lexington on April 19, 1775 -- before the U.S. Congress declared on April 11, 1783, that the Revolutionary War was over. The Treaty of Paris was signed on Sept. 3 that same year.
