It remains a mystery to most of us how rat boy -- Pete Doherty to his mates/dealers -- has become one of the most celebrated and feted figures in Britain today.
His songs are rubbish, both of his bands were terrible, he's an ugly little bugger and yet people like Jonathan Ross, who really should know better, seem to think that he's some sort of tortured genius, a Byron for the modern ages.
But even among his admirers, no one has as much admiration for Pete Doherty as, well, Pete Doherty.
