On a recent Saturday afternoon in Oneida, 15 members of the Madison-Oneida Amateur Radio Club gathered at Veterans' Field.

Amid sun and wind, the men constructed tents and shored up antennas in preparation for Field Day, a 24-hour nationwide exercise designed to help amateur radio operators sharpen their emergency-response skills under less-than-optimal conditions.

Sponsored by the American Radio Relay League - the national association for amateur radio - the annual event is held each June and features participants "working" as many stations as possible on amateur bands.
