It was a very hot midday in October in the Lukwika-Lumusilla Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. Our purpose was to hunt elephant, which we had been doing with few distractions for the past seventeen days. We were looking for sign along a sand river when Sengi, our old Wakamba tracker, signaled for my professional hunter and outfitter, Michel Mantheakis, to stop the vehicle. Sengi pointed, using his hand with crooked fingers in the Wakamba fashion; to point a finger would alert the game.
