Jul. 8--Henry Kissinger, the U.S. secretary of state during the Nixon and Ford administrations, could easily have been talking about Eva Duarte Peron when he said, "Power is the great aphrodisiac." The illegitimate daughter of a failed South American landowner rose through the ranks of power to become first lady of Argentina at age 26.
Her swift rise to fame and her death from cancer at age 33 are the focus of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 1978 musical "Evita." The Tony Award-winning musical will receive an encore staging at Lyric Theatre this week, with performances scheduled Tuesday through July 14 at Civic Center Music Hall.
