Jul. 8--For Mike Ryan, serving in the Vietnam War wasn't a chore, or his duty. It was more like a family tradition.

His father went to Vietnam in 1966, his older brother in 1968. And when Mr. Ryan graduated from high school in 1970, he didn't protest the Vietnam War, tear up his draft card or go to Canada. Instead, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. And now, his son is a petty officer in the Navy.

Even with a controversial war going on, he said, joining the military was "just the right thing to do back then. ... It was pretty much ingrained that we were all going to go to Vietnam."
