It is a cold December afternoon in Paris and the Sarah Bernhardt cafe is full of chilled protesters, fresh from the demonstration "pour la democracie en Algerie". Huddled over cafe au laits, small groups speak in hushed Maghrebian tones, discussing the implications of the "manifestation" in protest against the Islamists in Algeria, led for the moment by the Front Islamique du Salut (FIS). After a brief period of negotiation last autumn with the government, FIS leaders were placed under house arrest. But the authorities are no more popular with secular protesters than the likes of Abbasi Madani, the leader of FIS.
