Introduction
Many reasons have been offered for questioning the validity of student evaluations of faculty teaching performance or for minimizing their importance in decisions on faculty promotion and tenure. However, judging by the views of those scholars who have most thoroughly considered these evaluations, including Centra [13], Cohen [16], Costin, Greenough, and Menges [19], Feldman [21], McKeachie [31], and Murray [37], and especially by the recent, comprehensive review of the subfield by Marsh [33], few of these objections represent important challenges to the validity of student instructional ratings.
