Article: Clinton administration backs repeal of ANS export ban, with conditions. (Alaska North Slope crude oil export ban)

WASHINGTON -- Backers of moves to lift the ban on exports of Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude oil received a powerful boost Wednesday, when the Clinton administration announced it supports a repeal of the embargo.

Their next task will be to convince members of Congress to do the same. Some strong opponents of the repeal include Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), and Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.).

Deputy Energy Secretary William H. White expressed the administration's support of lifting the embargo at a hearing Wednesday by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
