Presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke last month at the United Church of Christ's national meeting in Hartford, Conn.
But don't interpret that as an endorsement of the Illinois senator, a member of the denomination, for president, says the Rev. Geoffrey Black, leader of the New York Conference of the United Church of Christ.
"We're staunch advocates of separation of church and state," Black said.
The denomination, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has a long history of taking public stands on controversial issues.
