Jul. 10--Midwesterners are wonderful volunteers.

We already knew that, but a recent survey by the Corporation for National Service just confirmed it. According to the study, Midwesterners are more likely to volunteer their time than are people elsewhere in the United States.

It is especially interesting to note that the highest rates were in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area -- pretty close to home -- where more than four in 10 adults volunteered.

The study used Census Bureau data to determine the share of people age 16 and older who had volunteered their time in the previous year. It provided three-year averages -- for 2004 through ...
