But what is the colon and what does it do?
The colon is a long coiled organ that connects the small intestine to the rectum and anus. It absorbs water and nutrients from digested food and helps move waste out of the body.
How common is colon cancer?
Dr. Mark Belfer, the family medicine residency program director at Akron General Hospital and professor of family medicine at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown, says colon cancer is common, but entirely treatable if caught early.
