At over half a million words, the question arises: why was this book written? It comprises a history of ideas and a rough political and social history of the past of Europe and the USA, which is written for the student and is short on causality and explanation, and it contains lengthy sections comprising discussions of philosophical thinkers, including an excellent section on Kant (pp. 357-81), one of the best parts of the book.
