Detroit Zoo director keeps job after controversy

The Detroit Zoological Society's board of directors voted Monday to keep Ron Kagan as executive director of the zoo after a review of allegations that Kagan misrepresented having a doctoral degree from Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. The review confirmed that although Kagan was a doctoral candidate for five years and completed his coursework, he did not finalize his Ph.D.

The board will give Kagan a written reprimand. He also was docked a month's pay and has made a public apology, which is posted at www.detroitzoo.org.

Kagan was appointed executive director in 1992.
