Early in 1811, "J. Burn" sent lengthy letters from Pontianak to Thomas Stamford Raffles in Malacca that are preserved in the British Library, London, as part of the Raffles Collection. (1) Raffles was at that time stationed in Malacca as "Agent to the Governor-General with the Malay States," appointed by Lord Minto, Governor-General of India for the English East India Company, and his duties involved taking steps to help protect British shipping in the region and planning the forthcoming British invasion of Java.
