In a lapidary critique of Southeast Asian historiography, Professor David K. Wyatt (1995) was able to identify only five English-language titles relating to the history of Brunei worthy of recommendation; and not even all of those were entirely satisfactory. Dr. Graham Irwin's Nineteenth Century Borneo: A Study in Diplomatic Rivalry (1955) is the oldest study to warrant the attention of the John Stambaugh Professor of Southeast Asian History at Cornell University.
