Four years ago, Mount Sinai Medical Center was in a downward spiral.
The proud teaching hospital and medical school complex on Manhattan's Upper East Side was battered by bad publicity over deaths in its liver transplant program. Patient numbers were down because of suburbanites' general reluctance to travel into the city after the Sept. 11 attacks.
