I have always felt some sort of a connection with the writer Sebastian Faulks. It was a connection based mostly on envy, but a connection nevertheless.
He was a journalist, like me. And also, like me, he wanted to be a writer. However, unlike me, he went ahead and wrote actual books.
And even more annoyingly, his books were widely read and admired and became bestsellers. It's enough to sicken you.
Faulks has also accomplished several writerly things that I have always dreamed of: he is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature; he came in at 13 in a survey of our best-loved writers, and he has a garret (well, a ...
