IN THE PAST COUPLE of months, a humongous bloom stalk from a century plant has shot to the sky, vying for high honors with a streetlight at the corner of Pacific Avenue and 10th Street in Virginia Beach.
Big around as a small tree and growing as if it were on steroids, the stalk is the culminating event of a century plant's life. The plant expends so much energy putting forth its huge bloom stalk that it dies soon thereafter, but not before causing a stir among those who notice the eye-catching giant.
