"I wish these silly hiccups would stop," Laurie complained to her mother one night as they were clearing the dinner table.
Her mother said, "They'll go away soon. You'll see."
But the hiccups did not go away. Laurie watched a TV show. Then she tried reading a book in her room. But she hiccuped and hiccuped and HICCUPED.
Finally Laurie went to find her mother. "Can't you do something to make hiccups go away?" she pleaded.
"A drink of water might help," Mother suggested.
Laurie drank some water. She was stopped once by a hiccup, which sounded strange in the glass and made her giggle. Had it worked? Were her hiccups gone?
