When Cassie Clark was 11, she wanted to try lifting weights. But she felt like a weakling. "I couldn't even lift the 44-pound [20 kg] practice bar," recalls Cassie, now 16. "My coach had to saw off a wooden broomstick for me to use - without any weights."
But last March, the 4[feet] 11 3/4[inches] (1.5) athlete from Savannah, Georgia, pumped as much iron as the brawniest boys in the country. At a meet where her best single lift was 165 pounds, or 75kg (about the weight of an adult man), Cassie became the first girl in the country to qualify for the men's junior national team - the iron-paved road to the Olympics.
