TOKYO, July 17 Asia Pulse - The earthquake that rocked Niigata Prefecture on Monday forced semiconductor and autoparts factories to suspend operations, and it sent firms scrambling to ascertain the extent of damage.

At Fuji Xerox Co.'s printer production unit, an official said that the quake caused more damage than the previous major quake that hit the area, in October 2004. This unit stopped production lines immediately to assess the situation. While it found no serious damage to equipment, a section of the building's ceiling was damaged. A loss of power caused the firm to suspend the checking of facilities Monday.
